This is my goldfish pond in the front yard. It is very enjoyable this time of year. We sit on the swing and listen to the water and watch hummingbirds. But along with spring, come SNAKES. I have never been afraid of them but, I get pretty upset when they set their sites in my koi for supper.
This is a biological filter I built to keep the water crystal clear. It has a 3" water space at the bottom, then a layer of lava rock. The top layer is pea gravel. The water circulates from the pond to the white PVC pipe in the middle, and filters up through the rock down the waterfall and back in the pond. This is where my guest was patiently scoping out his supper.
But I found him first.

I have ALWAYS wanted a pond. I'll bet you love it. Your description of the sound of the water is beautiful and one of the main reasons that I am attracted to them. I have always liked snakes, but I can see why you'd be protective of your fish. The fish look really big...are they? Living where I do, a pond isn't really a possibility. But, if I ever change locations, a pond will definitely be a priority. I want turtles...red-eared sliders...if possible. :)
The photos are great. I love the one of the fish taken from above!
I love my pond. When we sold our other place I told the lady the pond was not included. We dug it up and brought it with us. I didn't have the waterfall on it before. The sound of the water is so relaxing.
Yes, 3 of the fish are really big, about 15" to 16". I have raised all of them from babies. After hurricane Rita a LARGE crane had a feast. I only had 3 small fish that were able to hide under some rocks left. Probably close to $600.00 worth. I was pretty sick. A snake can do just as much damage pretty quick. I have always had a outside cat, so snakes have never been a problem. But, I alsolost my cat to the hurricane.
I KNOW I would like to have a pond with running water.
How did you lose your cat to the hurricane?
We had a lot of strays after the hurricane, One was evidently very hungry. My neighbor found her and 2 of his cats. It wasn't a pretty sight. Sally was not dead yet. He was kind enough to stop her suffering. Keith thinks it was probably a bobcat and not a stray dog. I had her for 8 years, she is missed.
Aspen has claimed Barbie's white kitten, my understanding is it is coming to my house for me and her to share.
